Sr. L: The Tinsmith wasn’t able to break us, so, after another interrogation the next morning, he let us go, without the confession he was so sure of getting. We saw my uncle after the High Mass for the Feast of the Assumption.
(All but the seers are walking home from the church. Ti is especially somber. Ti stops to sit on th steps of the rectory. Mrs. Gomes comes to him.)
Mrs. G: Ti, have you heard anything about the children?
Ti: Nobody knows. They may even be in Santarem by now.
Oldest C child: Look! Here they come!
(The oldest C child peels out of the way, so we can see the children running in the distance, Jacinta leading the way. Jose is walking behind.)
(Ti stands stunned, the people joyfully crowd around, making way for the kids.)
Jacinta: (offscreen) Daddy! Daddy!
Ti: Angel! (falling to his knees, Jacinta runs to him and he cries.) My princess!
(Francisco and Lucia follow Jacinta)
Francisco: Daddy! Bless us Daddy!
Lucia: Uncle! Bless us Uncle!
Ti: Son! Lucia! (making a cross on each of their foreheads) God bless you. God bless each of you.
(All stop celebrating and look at Jose who is standing, admiring the scene. Their stares make Jose uncomfortable)
Jose: (Collecting himself, very nervous) Here are your kids, Mr. Marto. (slinks out of scene in shame)
Mr. C: Where’s the Mayor?
(Manuel angry, picks up a large stick.)
Manuel: (going up the rectory stairs, raising the stick high in the air) Death to the Mayor!
(a tumult arises)
Ti: (gradually getting control) No! No! Please! Please no! No! (as soon as the tumult quiets down) We have our children back. Have faith in the Mother of God. Let retribution be hers.
(The camera focuses on Manuel. The crowd breaks up. Manuel, still visibly angry, hesitatingly puts down his stick and walks off.)

Sr. H: What a pity you missed seeing our Lady, though, Sister.
Sr. L: She knew it wasn’t our fault. So, I’m not sure when it was, it could have been the next Sunday...

Setting: Valinho (with sheep)
people:
Our Lady
Lucia
Francisco
Jacinta
Joano M.
Sr. L: (offscreen) I was watching the pasture with Francisco and his brother Joano late in the afternoon. Then I felt that something supernatural was going to happen.
(the children are herding the sheep, when Lucia stops dead in her tracks)
Lucia: Uh-oh. The Lady’s coming! Quick, Joano! Get Jacinta!
Joano: No. I want to see the Lady, too!
Lucia: Look. (pulls two coins out of her pocket) I have two coins. I’ll give you one to go get Jacinta, and one more if she gets here in time to see the Lady.
Joano: (holding the coin in admiration) Wow!
Lucia: Go!
Joano: Oh. (runs off)
Francisco: (yelling to him) Tell her the Lady is rushing over!
Francisco: It would be a pity if Jacinta didn’t get to see the Lady.
(The lightning strikes)
Lucia: (to no one in particular) Wait for Jacinta!
(Jacinta and Joano run over)
Jacinta: Where is she?
(The sun dims, Our Lady again stands on the tree. The children kneel.)
(Our Lady looks at the children)
(the children kneel, looking at Our Lady. Joano struggles to look at Our Lady.)
Lucia: What do you want of me?
Our Lady: I want you to continue going to the Cova da Iria on the 13th, and to continue praying the Rosary every day. In the last month, I’ll work a miracle so that all may believe. If you had not been taken away to the City, the miracle would have been much greater. St. Joseph will come with the Child Jesus to give peace to the world. Our Lord will come to bless the people. Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows will also come.
Lucia: What do you want done with the money that people leave at the Cova da Iria?
Our Lady: Have two litters made. One to be carried by you and Jacinta and two other girls dressed in white; the other one is to be carried by Francisco and three other boys. The money from the litters is for the Feast of the Holy Rosary, and what is left over will help toward the construction of a chapel that is to be built here.
Lucia: I would like to ask you to cure some sick persons.
Our Lady: Yes, I will cure some of them during the year. (looking sad) Pray, pray very much and make sacrifices for sinners, because many souls go to hell because there are none to pray for them.
(Our Lady again ascends to the east. The sun returns to normal)
Lucia: Look Jacinta! There she goes!
Jacinta: My Lady!
Francisco: (happy) I was afraid we wouldn’t see her this month.
Joano: (rubbing his eyes) I tried to see her, but I couldn’t. My eyes hurt.
Jacinta: Let’s stay here all day!
Francisco: No, Jacinta, Mother did not let you come here today with the sheep. (Jacinta is disappointed) Look, I’ll go with you.
Jacinta: (still disappointed) All right.
(Jacinta and Francisco both go up to the tree and grab a branch)
Jacinta: Smell this, Lucia.
Lucia: The scent of the Lady!

Scene 50
Sisters
Sr. L: Now Jacinta made the mistake of showing the branches to my mother first. But my mother did appreciate the smell of the branches. I think it mellowed her out somewhat. But my aunt and uncle were by now convinced that our Lady was coming to see us.
Sr. H: Did the Tinsmith give up?
Sr. L: Oh, no. He continued to spread rumors that he had every intention to kill me. One day, he sent someone to talk to us...

Jacinta
Mr. DV

Mrs. DV
(The three walk down the street and walk into Mr. do Varmo and Jose, who don’t let them pass.)
Lucia: Excuse me, Mr. do Varmo…
Mr. DV: Where do you think you’re going?
Lucia: We’re going home.
Jose: You’re going nowhere. You’d better tell us this secret of yours.
Lucia: We can’t
Mr. DV: Oh, who says you can’t?
Lucia: The Lady at the Cova.
Mr. DV: (mocking) The Lady at the Cova.
Lucia: That’s right.
Mr. DV: Well, you’d better tell us this secret, or we’ll have to rough you up
Jacinta: Wonderful! Then we’ll go to heaven!
Francisco: We can’t say the secret. Do as you wish to us.
Jose: (walking away with Mr. DV) see that you tell your secret soon. The Administrator has every intention on taking your lives. (They leave)
Jacinta: (happy) Wonderful! I so love our Lord and our Lady, and this way, we’ll see them soon!
Francisco: If they kill us, it’s all the same. We’ll go to heaven. (they walk off)
Sr. L: Jacinta was edifying also for her love of suffering for sinners. On the day before the next visit by our Lady, we were walking down the street, past the do Varmo house, although we weren’t aware of it. Mrs. do Varmo had said such terrible things to us, that Jacinta suggested that we offer sacrifices for her, because she could go to hell for saying such things.
(The seers walk down the street playing. They stop right when they get to the do Varmo door. Mrs. DV watches out the window)
Jacinta: Wait! Tomorrow is the Visit. Let’s stop playing and offer the sacrifice for the conversion of sinners. (raising eyes and hands, Francisco takes off his cap) My God, this is for the conversion of sinners and the love of Jesus, and in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Lucia & Francisco: Amen.
(Mrs. DV weeps and turns back from the window)
(At another point on the same road, spot a rope on the road.)
Lucia: Look! (Lucia picks up the rope) Tie my arm!
(Jacinta and Francisco the the rope around Lucia’s arm. They take a couple of steps.)
Lucia: (stopping) Ow! It hurts! Look, we could tie it around our waists and offer it as a sacrifice to God.
Jacinta: Yeah!
Francisco: Good idea.
(they walk off)
Sr. L: Francisco cut the rope into three parts, and we each got a part of it, and wore it around our waists.

Sr. L: Jacinta hurt so bad, she couldn’t hide her tears. But we couldn’t talk her out of it.
Sr. H: That’s too bad.
Sr. L: She was quite devout, Jacinta was. Anyways, it’s September 13th.

Pilgrims
Sr. L: There were over twenty-five thousand people at the Cova..
(throngs of people come to the Cova, many kneel down and start to pray the Rosary.)
(Mrs. do Varmo and Mrs. Gomes walk together.)
Mrs. DV: And I would really like to see the Woman, Imelda.
Mrs. G: Oh, perish the thought!
Mrs. DV: I’m surprised at you, Imelda.
Mrs. G: Oh, goodness, Rita. I’m just honored to be here. But... (acting like she is struck with a thought.) You know, though, Jacinta brought back a branch with her once.
Mrs DV: Really?
Mrs. G: Oh, yes, and it gave off the most exquisite scent.
Mrs. DV: Really?
Mrs. G: Even though I wouldn’t dream of being granted the privilege of seeing her (pulls out a HUGE mason jar from her purse), I’m sure the Lady wouldn’t begrudge me if I asked her for just a few drops, the most insignificant residue of her perfume.
Mrs. DV: Oh.
Sr. L: Every man uncovered his head, and nearly everyone knelt. It was a pilgrimage worthy of the name.
(group scene. Many are praying the Rosary, others are making their way. Manuel and the seers go through)
Manuel: Let them through! Let them through!
Pilgrims: Ask her to cure my son!
And my blind child!
Ask my husband to come home from the war!
Ask her to convert a sinner!
To cure me from tuberculosis!
Mrs. DV: And to convert my husband!
(Lucia looks around, and then joins her cousins who are already kneeling and praying the Rosary. Keep this scene going for a while.)
Sr. L: Now, when I read in the New Testament about our Lord passing through Palestine, I think our Lord allowed me to see that while yet a child, on the road from Aljustrel to Fatima and on the Cova da Iria. I give thanks to God for the faith of these good Portuguese people. If they so humbled themselves before three poor children because they had the grace to see the Mother of God, what would they do if they saw our Lord Himself before them?
Lucia: Here she comes!
(The sun dims, and various colors of light are shown. Our Lady stands on top of the tree, during the apparition, there periodically falls white flower petals from the sky)
Lucia: What do you want of me?
Our Lady: Continue to say the Rosary to obtain the end of the war. In October, our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. St. Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices. He does not want you to sleep with the rope on, but only to wear it in the daytime.
Lucia: I was told to ask you of many things: the cure of a deaf-mute, the cure of some sick people…
Our Lady: Yes, I will cure some, but not others, because our Lord does not trust them.
Lucia: The people would like to have a chapel here.
Our Lady: With half the money make litters to be carried in procession on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary; the other half is for the chapel.
Lucia: (pulls out two letters and a little bottle) Somebody gave me these. Do you want them?
Our Lady: Those are not needed in heaven. In October, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.
